Funding

Guaranteed Funding

The Department of Psychology offers generous funding packages which currently exceed the cost of tuition. Graduate students in Psychology at Western are offered guaranteed funding for 2 years of Master’s and 4 years of Doctoral studies.

Guaranteed annual funding package by degree for 2023/24 academic year:

Master’s: $26,411 CDN/year for domestic students and $37,411 CDN/year for international

Doctoral: $27,411 CDN per year for domestic and $26,965 for international, both groups pay domestic tuition

These funding packages are made possible primarily through the Western Graduate Research Scholarship (WGRS) and Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTAs).

Scholarships:

Many of our graduate students have been successful in obtaining additional funding through external scholarship competitions, including master’s or doctoral-level scholarships from SSHRC, NSERC and CIHR, or the Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) competition. Supervisor support

In addition to the funding package above, many supervisors provide students who do not have external scholarship support with additional funds in the form of travel reimbursement and stipends.

Additional Awards

Psychology graduate students also have access to a variety of award competitions from the department, university and external sources, which are merit- and needs-based. These can be used to cover additional travel and research needs. Please visit the Donor Awards and SGPS sites to learn more about these opportunities.
