The Department of Psychology congratulates the award-winning students of 2023. Their achievements are remarkable, especially considering the challenges we’ve all faced during the pandemic. These students’ hard work and talent are exemplary, and we recognize and commend all they have accomplished during their academic journey at Western.

Department of Psychology Awards and Scholarships
R.B. Liddy Gold Medal
This is awarded to a graduating student highest modular average amongst all of this year’s Psychology Honours Specialization Graduates. Endowed in memory of the late Professor R. B. Liddy, Head of the Department of Psychology at this University, 1931-1954, by his children Catherine and James, both graduates of this University.
Gold Medal for Psychology Honors Specialization BA
This is awarded to a graduating student who has received the highest modular average amongst all of this year’s Psychology Honours Specialization BA Graduates.
Gold Medal for Psychology Honors Specialization BSc
This is awarded to a graduating student who has received the highest modular average amongst all of this year’s Psychology Honours Specialization BSc Graduates.
Gold Medal for Psychology Honors Specialization Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience BSc
This is awarded to a graduating student who has received the highest modular average amongst all of this year’s Psychology Honours Specialization Developmental Cognitive BSc Graduates.
Gold Medal for Honours Double Major, which includes a Psychology Major
This is awarded to a graduating student who has received the highest modular average amongst all of this year’s Honours Double Major, which includes a Psychology Major
Nancy K. Innis Memorial Award
This award is granted to the student who has achieved the highest mark in the course Psychology 3950F/G – History of Psychology.
Clark and Mary J. Wright Scholarship
This award is granted annually to a fourth year student with an "A" average who upon graduation will be entering a graduate program, preferably in Developmental Psychology.
W.J. McClelland Award
This award is granted annually to the graduating Psychology student whose Senior Honours Thesis is judged the most outstanding.
Linda Smith-Holbert Award in Early Childhood Education
This award is granted annually to a third or fourth-year undergraduate student who has demonstrated academic excellence in the Psychology course offered in that year that relates most to study of early childhood education in the Department of Psychology. The Award was established in memory of the late Linda Smith-Holbert who was a highly-esteemed early childhood educator at University Laboratory School in the Department of Psychology from 1979 until 1989, by her family, friends, and colleagues.
Bogal-Szot Award in Psychology
Awarded annually to a full-time undergraduate student in Year 3 or 4 of any degree program in Psychology who is participating in an experiential learning placement or research program. The Department of Psychology will select the recipient based on academic achievement. To be considered, students must submit an application to the Department of Psychology outlining their experiential learning placement opportunity or research program. The Department will determine the application deadline. This award was established with a generous gift from Mr. Henry Szot. Value: 1 at $4,500 Effective Date: 2021-2022 academic year
Faculty of Social Science Awards and Scholarships
London and District Distress Centre Award is given to a student based on academic achievement and being and active volunteer in the London community. This legacy award was established by a generous gift from the London and District Distress Centre (LDDC) to reward students for giving of their time and talents to improve the lives of those in the London community. Value $1,000.
Edna Jeffery Scholarship is given to an Honours Psychology student based on academic excellence in second year. This award was bequeathed to the University by the late Mrs. Edna Jeffery. Value $500.
Faculty of Social Science Alumni Awards were established by Social Science alumni to recognize students who have demonstrated academic excellence. Value $1,500.
Social Science Students’ Council Leadership Awards
Awarded annually to full-time undergraduate students registered in the Faculty of Social Science (main campus) in the previous year and who are currently registered in the Faculty of Social Science (main campus) in their second, third or fourth year, with a minimum 70% average. Chancellor’s Prize in Social Science Bachelor Program
Awarded annually by the Dean to an outstanding Social Science student graduating with a 3-year or 4-year Bachelor Degree, based on performance in the graduating year. The award will consist of a suitably engraved gift from the Faculty of Social Science.

Awarded annually by the Dean to an Outstanding Social Science student graduating with an Honors Bachelor degree, based on performance in the graduating year. The award will consist of a suitably engraved gift from the Faculty of Social Science.
Western University Awards and Scholarships
Governor General’s Medals
Awarded to two undergraduate students who achieve the highest academic standing in an Honors specialization or double Major leading to a 4-year Bachelor’s degree. 2 Silver Medals.
University of Western Ontario Gold Medal—Highest average in Psychology HBSc Module and Honors Double Major Module
Awarded for academic performance in fourth year for all honors programs when no other medal is awarded. Recipients must have (a) completed a prescribed academic program requiring five or more courses in the fourth year of an honors program, (b) taken the full complement of the prescribed courses for the fourth year of the academic program (both principal and elective courses) within that fourth year, and (c) achieved an average of at least 80% (“A) overall and in the principal courses of the fourth year.
