HONOURS SPECIALIZATION B.Sc. in PSYCHOLOGY
10.0 Course Module CHECKLIST
Purpose of Hon. BSc. Module: To provide a thorough grounding in the principles of Psychology for students who may wish to pursue graduate training in Psychology and for students who prefer a more research-intensive approach to the study of Psychology than is provided under either the Major or Minor programs in Psychology. This module focuses on the biological foundations of behavior, with courses primarily in the areas of neuroscience, cognition, sensation, and perception.

FIRST YEAR Requirements: To be eligible for admission to the Honours Specialization Program-BSc, students must complete 5.0 first-year courses by May 1, with no failures, and must have an average of at least 75% in 3.0 principal courses, with no mark in these principal courses below 60% (HOWEVER, because this is a competitive program, the cut-off average is usually well above the minimum of 75%; it is currently above 81%). The 3.0 principal courses must include the Psychology, Mathematics and Science courses listed below.
1.0 courses from: both of Psychology 1002A/B AND Psychology 1003A/B (or Psychology 1000) 0.5 course from: Calculus 1000A/B, Calculus 1301A/B, Calculus 1500A/B, Mathematics 1225A/B, Mathematics 1228A/B, Mathematics 1229A/B, Mathematics 1600A/B, or Applied Mathematics 1201A/B. Mathematics 1228A/B is recommended. 1.0 courses from: Biology 1001A or Biology 1201A, and Biology 1002B or Biology 1202B. 1.0 courses from: Chemistry 1301A/B, Chemistry 1302A/B, Computer Science 1025A/B, Computer Science 1026A/B, Computer Science 1027A/B, the former Physics 1028A/B, the former Physics 1029A/B, Physics 1201A/B, Physics 1202A/B, the former Physics 1301A/B, the former Physics 1302A/B, Physics 1501A/B, Physics 1502A/B. |

SECOND, THIRD and FOURTH YEAR:
r1.0 courses: Psychology 2811A/B (min 70%) and 2812A/B (min 75%) (CAUTION: you need at least 2.0 Science/Basic Med Sciences courses at the 2100+ level. See first NOTE on next page regarding the 2nd science course [1.0] that is outside of and in addition to the 1.0 science course that is mentioned above) ranother 1.0 courses in Science/Basic Medical Sciences numbered 2100+ (see NOTE below) r1.0 courses: Psychology 4850E or 4851E
CAUTION: If you are fulfilling your 2nd year Statistics requirement in the Psychology Hon. Spec. module with a 2nd year Statistics course taught in another department that is antirequisite to Psychology 2811A/B, then you MUST replace it with 0.5 credit course in Psychology numbered 2100 or higher. In other words, you need fully 9.0 pure Psychology credits at the second year level and higher for the Psychology Hon. Spec-B.Sc. You must also receive a grade of 70% or higher in the alternative stats course.
Subsidiary Courses: 5.0 courses outside your module, and amongst which a minimum of 1.0 courses must be in an area other than Psychology.
Progression Requirements: Students who are enrolled in a Psychology Honours Specialization program must maintain a minimum modular average of 75% with no Psychology module course mark below 60% to progress in the module.
Late Entrance Requirements: Students who wish to enter this module after Years 2 or 3 must have a minimum cumulative average of 75% in their last 10.0 courses, with no Psychology course mark below 60%. However, because this is a competitive program, the cut-off entry average is usually above 81%. |

NOTE: You need at least 2.0 Science/Basic Med Science courses at the 2100 and above level – 1.0 is within this Psychology module, and the other 1.0 can be done as an elective course or as part of another module. In other words, in order to satisfy graduation requirements for an Honours Bachelor of Science degree, students are required to take, outside of and in addition to the 1.0 Science/Basic Med Science course that is part of the Psychology Honours Specialization B.Sc. module, an additional 1.0 Science/Basic Med Science course at the 2100 level or above. Again, you need at least 2.0 Science/Basic Med Science courses at the 2100 and above level – 1.0 is within this Psychology module, and the other 1.0 can be done as an elective course or as part of another module NOTE: To fulfill the BSc requirements within the Honours Specialization in Psychology - BSc module, 6.0 of the Psychology courses must be selected from the following list of Psychology courses: 2115A/B, 2134A/B, 2135A/B, 2210A/B, 2220A/B, 2221A/B, 2801F/G, 2802F/G, 2811A/B, 2812A/B, 3130A/B, 3138F/G, 3139A/B, 3140F/G, 3141F/G, 3184F/G, 3185F/G, 3195F/G, 3209F/G, 3221F/G, 3224A/B, 3225A/B, 3226A/B, 3228A/B, 3230F/G, 3285F/G, 3295F/G, 3440F/G, 3441F/G, 3442F/G, 3443F/G, 3444F/G, 3485F/G, 3800F/G, 4115F/G, 4190F/G, 4195F/G, 4222F/G, 4223F/G, 4224F/G, 4260F/G, 4290F/G, 4295F/G, 4851E, the former 2800E, the former 2810, or the former 3223F/G. NOTE: No more than 14.0 courses in one subject may be counted among the 20.0 successfully completed courses used to fulfill graduation requirements. So if a student is taking more than 10.0 courses in Psychology (including the first year level Psychology), the student needs to consider the impact this may have on her/his plans for a major or minor in another subject area. NOTE: The Honours Specialization Programs in Psychology have limited enrolment. In cases where the number of applicants exceeds the number of available spaces, entry into the program will be competitive; students who meet the minimum requirements may be refused admission. All degrees require 1.0 Social Science course (A), 1.0 Arts & Humanities course (B), 1.0 Science course (C) and 2.0 essay courses. |
