Research

Our research team studies social behaviour and cognition from evolutionary, mechanistic, and developmental perspectives. Specifically, we seek to understand how and why individuals form long-lasting relationships, or social bonds. How do social bonds emerge, and what behaviours sustain these bonds? Why do individuals and species vary in their degree of social bonding? How do neural systems in the brain shape behaviours that support bonding? We use comparative approaches to address these questions, and most of our work is on mammalian systems. Current recent directions focus on vocal communication and pair-bonding in prairie voles, a rodent known for its monogamous mating system.
