PROGRAM OF STUDY

Areas of Study in the Department
The Psychology graduate program at UWO provides advanced training in seven Areas of Study. Each student, upon admission to the program, is also admitted to one of these Areas within the department. This area is responsible for the general supervision of his or her program.

Behavioural and Cognitive Neuroscience
Clinical
Cognition and Perception
Developmental
Industrial/Organizational
Personality and Measurement
Social

Faculty Supervisors
Research supervision is provided by a Supervisor (chosen at admission time) and a Thesis Supervisory Committee (chosen as soon as practicable and usually no later than thesis proposal time). The supervisor will also assist the student in the selection of courses and other matters relating to the program of study.

Take note that some faculty from other departments have been given adjunct or cross appointment status enabling them to supervise graduate students in the Department of Psychology.

For each faculty member's research interests, please visit the research area listed above.

MSc Degree Requirements
The MSc degree requires:
a) Psychology 9540 (Research Design); a full year course
b) Two additional substantive half courses (to be approved by the supervisor, supervisory committee and Area)
c) Additional course work if required by the Area
d) Thesis

MSc candidates are required to complete a satisfactory thesis by August 31st of the year they intend to apply to and enter the PhD program or they will not be permitted to register as PhD candidates. In the event this deadline is not met, the student must register as second year MSc student. Admission to PhD will be permitted at the beginning of the following term if the MSc thesis is satisfactorily completed and the field and the program approval is forthcoming. If the thesis is not completed by the end of the Fall term, the student must apply by January 4 for PhD admission. An MSc thesis of high quality must be completed for admission into the PhD program.

Doctoral Degree Requirements The emphasis is on the training of scientists, with students in applied areas trained on the scientist-practitioner model. The program typically includes graduate seminars and courses, comprehensive examinations in one area of specialization, and a dissertation based on a research project. The minimum residence requirement is six terms of full-time study after a Master's degree, but completion of the degree may require a period extending beyond the minimum residence requirement.

In addition to the requirements for the master's degree, a student must take the equivalent of two full substantive graduate courses or four substantive half courses in the PhD I and II years, with at least one full course or two half courses taken in the PhD I year. If Psychology 9540 Research Design, or its equivalent, has not been taken at the Master's level, it must be taken in the PhD I year. The following are required within each year.

PhD I
a) Additional course work if required by the field
b) Comprehensive examination as required by the field
c) PhD thesis planning

PhD II
a) Additional course work if required by the field
b) Thesis

Some fields require substantially more course work taken in PhD III and PhD IV.

The emphasis is on the training of scientists with students in the clinical field trained on the scientist-practitioner model. All students enrolled in the PhD program must successfully complete a comprehensive examination or examinations. Field committees are responsible for the content and nature of the comprehensive examination or examinations for students in their field. Fields may have common examinations if such are feasible.

May Evaluation of Graduate Student Thesis Research Progress

In the spring of each year, all Faculty Supervisors of Graduate Students in Psychology report the thesis research progress of their students. The supervisor is asked to indicate which components of the thesis have been completed satisfactorily (e.g., review of the literature, acceptance of the thesis proposal, data collection, etc.).

Completed evaluation forms and annual student reports will be used to compile the May Evaluation Report that will be distributed to all full-time faculty in the third week of May in time for review before the May Evaluation Meeting in the last week of May.

The Psych Grad Office will use these forms to prepare the letters distributed to each student by the third week of June. MSc form; PhD form

Part-Time Studies
The Department does not have a part-time program.
