Research Activities

My particular interest lies in the field of Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience. More specifically, I seek to understand how children develop basic numerical skills using behavioral as well as functional and structural brain imaging methods. I investigate both the typical and atypical trajectories of number development. My research team and I aim to understand the role of very basic numerical processes (such as understanding of magnitude, counting, early calculation abilities etc.) and their contribution to the typical and atypical development of numerical and mathematical competence. Through this research I aim to understand the extent to which number skills that develop before children enter the formal classroom account for the variance in children's abilities in school. The goal of this research is to provide meaningful data that can contribute to the design of tools for the early diagnosis and remediation of developmental difficulties with basic numeracy and mathematics. I am very interested in forging connections between Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience and Education as part of the new field of ‘Mind, Brain and Education’

In addition to my developmental interests, I am pursuing research into the neural basis of numerical cognition in the adult brain. Here I am looking to address question that related to the automaticity with which we process numerical stimuli, the neural correlates of symbolic and non-symbolic numerosity processing and the abstract representation of small and large numerical magnitude in the brain.
