Humans use categories when interacting with the world, perceiving speech, solving problems, and making decisions. My Categorization Lab investigates how people learn concepts and categories, and how categorical information is applied to various decisions.

One line of research uses computational models to uncover how different categories are represented. For example, people represent some kinds of categories by abstracting a prototype, others by learning rules, an still others by storing specific exemplars. In some cases, the same category might be represented in more than one way. Another line of research investigates how people distribute attention to various features of objects as they are learning categories and how this attention is affected by the demands of various learning tasks and the structure of the category.

The Cataegorization Lab also works on the development of new computational models and new modeling techniques that can be used to address the central research themes in the psychology of concepts and catagories and can also be adapted for other uses in cognitive psychology.

The Categorization Lab is a suite of rooms located in the Social Science Centre. We are supported by NSERC and have separate facilities for testing participants and for computational modeling. Please visit the Categorization Lab website for more information.
